26 Oct 2015

The managing director of Tati Nickel Mining Company (TNMC), Mr Ditiro Lentswe has said his mine will continue to assist the underprivileged members of the community in the villages around it.

Speaking at the end of a 20 kilometre charity walk on Saturday (October 24), Mr Lentswe said since 2010, the mine engaged in the charity walk and in 2012 significant amounts were raised for building houses for underprivileged community members in the villages of Matshelagabedi, Matsiloje and Matopi.

He noted that so far, seven houses were built and handed over to the beneficiaries in the three villages.

Mr Lentswe said although the base metal is faced with a serious challenge of decline in prices, the mine will continue in its efforts of corporate social responsibility.

Mr Lentswe thanked all the sponsors and the over 600 walkers for their contribution in ensuring the mine realises its dream of assisting Batswana.

TMNC public relations manager, Mr Tebogo Rapitsenyane said the main sponsor of the walk was Mascom and it sponsored with a total of over P89 000.

Meanwhile, in a media release, Mr Rapitsenyane indicated that besides the participation fees paid by companies, clubs, employees and individuals, the mine has a  ‘donate a day’ concept exercised by its employees.

He stated that with donate a day, employees voluntarily donate their leave days and the cash equivalent to that is deposited into the charity fund.

Mr Rapitsenyane further said apart from raising funds for charity, the walk which is themed, We Care, also gives an opportunity to all those who participate to keep fit and network.

The North East District Commissioner, Mr Rapetse Mathumo thanked the mine for building houses for the needy, noting that the initiative is in line with the Presidential Housing Appeal. The guest walker was the chief executive officer of Mascom, Mr Jose Couceiro. Ends
