22 Oct 2015
The outgoing High Commissioner of Mozambique to Botswana, Dr Tiago Castigo, on Wednesday paid a courtesy call on the Acting President, Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi to bid him farewell as his term has ended.
Speaking in an interview after his courtesy call to the Acting President, the outgoing Mozambican High Commissioner, who has been in Botswana since 2009, hailed Botswana for its prudent management of natural resources for the benefit of the nation, especially the diamonds.
“I am very impressed by the way Botswana controls and manages the resources that it has for the benefit of the people. We are a new nation and we are discovering a lot of resources, but we have not yet started exploring them. The experience from Botswana will be our inspiration,” he added.
During his term in Botswana, he said he concentrated all the effort to strengthening the relations between the two countries and governments, which he said were historical.
Botswana, he said was very important, as the country played a supportive role during Mozambique's liberation struggle “some of our leaders passed through here in a very difficult moment, even when Botswana was not independent, on their way to Tanzania to join the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (FRELIMO).”
As his term ends, he expressed gratitude that since the inception of the bilateral relations, between Botswana and Mozambique the two countries had maintained very cordial relations.
Besides providing an opportunity to strengthen the bilateral relations shared by both Botswana and Mozambique, the outgoing High Commissioner said his nearly six year term in Botswana also created an opportunity for the Presidents of both countries to become more even closer than they were. ENDS
