Water shortage to last two years

21 Oct 2015

The prevailing water shortage in the southern part of the country is likely to last for about two years, says minerals energy and water resources minister, Mr Kitso Mokaila.

Addressing a kgotla meeting in Ramotswa on Tuesday (October 20), Mr Mokaila said his ministry would mount water tanks in areas most affected by the water shortage. Mr Mokaila added that Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) would use water bowsers to fill the tanks.

He expressed disappointment that some water tanks were stolen while some people seized the opportunity to draw water in bulk from the tanks for construction and livestock.

He said his ministry would work with Village Development Committees (VDCs) to identify critical areas and to guard the tanks. Mr Makaila said his ministry has advised the Ministry of Education and Skills Development and the Ministry of Health to also mount water tanks in their facilities.

Mr Mokaila added that his ministry would ensure that the water tanks were filled with water. “The southern part of Botswana will have low rainfall for some time,” said Mr Mokaila, adding that there was a need for members of the public to conserve the little water that was available to them.

The minister also noted that between 20 and 30 per cent of water was lost through leakages. He said the government was working hard to address the challenge, adding that the ministry was also considering introducing a pre-paid water billing system.

He urged residents to access their water bills through short massage services (sms), electronic mails or telephonically. During comments, Mr Mmoloki Setlhoka asked the minister to consider installing water pipes at WUC offices to specifically service farmers.

He also complained about delays in the issuing of sand mining permits, adding that it contribute to illegal practices.

While Mr Oaitse Bolokang advised that all residential houses have rain water harvesting infrastruture. Another resident, Ms Bena Morokane said residents of Disaneng and Magope have been without water and electricity for over 10 years. Ends
