No minimum speed on roads
19 Apr 2013
The Minister of Transport and Communication, Mr Nonofo Molefhi has told parliament that the Road Traffic Act does not have any punitive measures defined for slow moving traffic.
He said currently there is no minimum speed limit described for roads in Botswana.
The minister said the current practice prevailing in the country since the widening of highways is that motorists should voluntarily make way for other fast moving vehicles.
He said as part of the on going educational campaigns on road safety, they will continue to encourage motorists to not only make way for fast vehicles, but that in the interest of safety for all road users, they must always exercise restraint while driving.
MP for Nata/Gweta, Mr Rayner Makosha had asked him to state why motorists who drive slowly especially on highways should not be penalised despite the danger they pose to other motorists by such behavior.
He also asked why such motorists are not encouraged to give way to other motorists as a matter of practice by traffic officers. ENDS
