Club membership crucial

19 Oct 2015

Botswana Premier League, chief executive officer, Bennett Mamelodi says for any club to be successful it should have organised structures.

Speaking at Mochudi Centre Chiefs Council of chairpersons launch, on Saturday (October 17), he said more work has to be done by all stakeholders in the club, adding that all structures should be functional and organised along known practices of governance and discipline.

He said for Mochudi Centre Chiefs to mobilise membership, they need to be cognisant of numbers, adding that for commercial success, they need to document traceable membership.

He said they could use the membership information to package themselves in order to exploit commercial opportunities, as well as luring sponsorship into their club.

“Borussia Dortmund in Germany is very strong by its members, supporters and that is how they were able to build their commercial success, they managed to organise themselves and attracted partners and eventually results came,” he said.

Mamelodi said the players that Chiefs produce should be able to attract international recognition and that could be achieved if governance issues were properly organised from the branch level to the top management.

He said it was common knowledge that the club has national appeal, and it was not just a team that has a following at Mochudi and Gaborone only, even in the new media it should be known beyond the shores of Botswana, so that the existing commercial opportunities could be availed to the team.

For his part, the clubs head of technical department, Ernest Molome has assured the members that despite a sloppy performance they would definitely challenge for the honours.

He said after their meeting with both the technical team and the players, there was going to be an improvement in the team’s results.

Furthermore, Molome said as the club management, they knew what the problem was, and why the club was not scoring in the games, but he was adamant that Mochudi Centre Chiefs would win the beMOBILE Premiership championship.

He said Centre Chiefs as a brand, they have to lead by example, adding that they have also improved the landscape of Botswana football, given that they were the first team to pay players better salaries.

The clubs chairperson, Raymond Tsheko said in 2013 they dissolved the society and formed a trust, hence it was imperative for the trust to have a governing structure.

He said the trust has since elected the board of trustees which provides policy direction for the club, adding all branches according to trust constitution are affiliated to the trust.

Tsheko further said all members interested become members of the branches, “a member has to belong to a branch and the branch affiliates to the trust and the chairpersons Council of chairpersons,” he said.  Ends
