The Minister of Labour and Home Affairs, Mr Edwin Batshu says sustainable development cannot be achieved by individuals alone but through strong partnerships and cooperation. Speaking at the Chinese donation to Mosadi Khumo in Gaborone yesterday, Mr Batshu said Botswana and China have demonstrated commitment and support for each other for over 40 years.
He said the donation of P50 000 from the Chinese community to Mosadi Khumo would go a long way in empowering women and their economic status.
He noted that Mosadi Khumo has the potential to support and complement government efforts in line with the economic stimulus programme which seeks to strengthen efforts towards accelerating employment creation and economic diversification.
“Mosadi Khumo is a fast growing group with big dreams. I met them and looked at their constitution in which they gave a comprehensive briefing on their vision,” he said.
However, Mr Batshu urged Mosadi Khumo not to disappoint and ensure prudent use of the resources for the empowerment of members and communities. He said by so doing they would be able to attract more support.
Minister Batshu said the government would continue to provide targeted support to women enterprises. He said his ministry aims to create an enabling environment to sustain women enterprises.
Meanwhile, the Ambassador of China to Botswana, Mr Zheng Zhuaqiang said the donation was a partnership under the theme: ''China-Africa, people to people friendship action.”
He said China has made vigorous efforts in implementing the action by providing financial assistance to NGO’s and other people by supporting relevant self-service programmes in African countries.
Mr Zhuaqiang said with the support offered, Mosadi Khumo would help more Batswana women to further develop their skills, gain wider independence and live a happier life. Ends
