Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) has appointed Falcon Sedimo its chief executive officer. The post fell vacant in 2013 following the departure of Percy Raditladi after serving for six months. Thato Kgosimore has been acting on the position.
Sedimo, who is the former director of sports and recreation (DSR) in the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture has signed a five-year contract with BNSC.
Speaking at the official introduction on Monday (October 12), BNSC chairperson Solly Reikeletseng said the CEO had to implement what was prescribed as key functions of the commission in the new act.
He said one of their goals was to win five gold medals at the Olympic Games.
He said the establishment of the commission was not going to be easy as it was a total overhaul of sporting structures. Reikeletseng said some of the responsibilities of the commission included taking care of sport development and elite sport development.
“So we are looking at a robust organisation, where Rre Sedimo has to ensure that we implement everything in a serious manner,” he said.
For his part, Sedimo told the media that his new job was to make tangible progress with quantifiable achievements.
He said part of his duties would be to ensure the production of athletes that will make it to the elite level and to make Botswana globally competitive in sport. He said sport contributed significantly to national unity and pride.
He added that as they prepared for the 50th anniversary of independence next year, they would want to ensure that the role of sport and the BNSC stand out.
“Generally, I am going to be in the driving seat directing a team of men and women from the various departments that make up the BNSC.
Our endeavour is to take this organisation forward,” he said.
Sedimo started his career as a teacher in 1992 where he also served as a volleyball coach and a senior sports teacher at Naledi Senior Secondary School.
He holds a Master of Science in Sports Management from Sheffield Hallam University in England. Throughout his career, he entrenched himself to the service of sport through which he developed through the ranks.
He has held the position of secretary general of the Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA).
He was instrumental in the formation of the Confederation of School Sports Association of Southern Africa (COSSASA) where he was secretary general in its formative years.
In 1998, he left teaching and joined the Department of Sport and Recreation, then under the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs. From February 2002 to March 2004, he worked as executive director of the Botswana National Youth Council.
He has also worked for the Botswana Football Association as chief executive officer from 2004 to 2006.
He returned to the Department of Sports and Recreation from November 2006 to March 2014 as director, then under the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture. He then worked as a policy specialist, responsible for sport and recreation in the same ministry from April 2014 to September 2015 when he joined BNSC. Ends
