Society raises funds for centre

12 Oct 2015

Botswana Society for the Deaf, a non profit organization will hold a fund raising Patron dinner in a quest to raise funds towards the construction  of a new hostel block at Ramotswa Centre for the Deaf .

The dinner is scheduled for Maharaja Restaurant & Conference Centre in Gaborone on November 6.

The Botswana society for the deaf empowers and promotes the interests and welfare of the deaf population in Botswana.

The society, whose patron is the third President of Botswana Mr Festus   Mogae aims to raise P1.1 million  for the construction of the hostel block.

The society's spokesperson Ms Lorato Marope, said proceeds from this year's dinner will be used in the construction of a hostel block for Standard 1, 2 and 3 pupils exclusively.

“Following the successful Patron's dinner in 2013, where some building bricks were purchased for construction of a hostel at Ramotswa Centre for Deaf Education, we felt encouraged to host a similar event this year, this time with the intention to build a new block for Standard 1, 2 and 3 pupils,” she said.

Ms Marope said the proposed new hostel block came about after they realised that there is over-crowding of children of various age groups in both boys' and girls' hostels at their facilities, and they believe that such a scenario poses health hazard to the children and is an impediment to their social development and welfare.

In addition, she said, the centre receives increasing and additional enrolment on an annual basis, resulting in hostels being continuously overcrowded.

She said tickets for the dinner were already on sale and go for P10 000 for a table of 10 people, and P1 000 each ticket per person.

“One may also pledge building material or any kind of donation towards our initiative. We also welcome initiatives such as sponsorship for unemployed deaf individuals to grace the dinner where our patron is expected to speak,” she revealed.

She said should the public seek for more information concerning the event, they can contact Botswana Society for the Deaf office at +267 3188374, or visit their nearest branch.  Ends
