Ayuso wins inaugural Mascom challenge

Sensational road biker, Bernardo Ayuso stormed to an emphatic victory in the inaugural Mascom Cycle challenge on Sunday (September 27).
Ayuso dusted himself up after a disappointing third position spot in last week’s tough off road Mokolodi scorpion challenge when he succumbed to Thato Madimabe in the 55kilometres dusty terrains.
The youngster who plies his trade in the professional ranks in Spain with Gomur Cantabria recorded an impressive 2 hours 32 minutes and 37 seconds for the entire 100kilomteres which saw riders sprint off from the Airport Junction to Rasesa through the high ascent and steep descent of the A1 Highway.
Victory eluded Jwaneng cycling clubs’ youngster, Lulu Telekelo once again as he had to pull out a second spot performance behind Ayuso for the second time running.
About two weeks ago Telekelo came seconds behind Ayuso in the Jwaneng Mine general managers race in Jwaneng. For the second time Ayuso and Telekelo came into the race as prime contenders. On Sunday it was a case of too little too late for Telekelo and third placed Kyle Poppleton as Ayuso managed to hold off the frantic chase from the duo right from the second loop around Pilane Hills.
Telekelo’s skillful breakaways in areas of high descent proved a handful for Ayuso, but the latter’s perfect technique in cornering his opponents finally paid off at the finishing point.
The race, which was described as a major success by its organisers, had attracted more than 200 riders and was sponsored by Mascom to the tune of P70 000.
In the 20kilometres junior race, Ronald Chiahengo was crowned the overall winner while the female category was won by Janine Du Toit. In the 60kilometres, which took riders to Pilane foothills, Elvis Setshogo won the male race while Heidi Gopolang was crowned the female winner and 60km junior male was Arnold Kokwane was the final winner.
