Car spinning back bigger better

17 Sep 2015

After two years on the side-line, Botswana Motor Sport(BMS) in conjunction with Spin City and Spin Speed look set to revamp the rally techniques (car spinning) challenge.

Spin City, a brain child of Mantshwabisi Fan Club, which was established in September 2010 saw off their last show taking place about two years back.

The event partners and organisers have promised a revamped and better event, with a thrilling car spinning activity hence the event is dubbed, ‘The Resurrection’. It will be hosted at Fairgrounds Spinning Palace on  September 26.

This year’s Spin City will feature five top spinners from South Africa and six from Botswana. The General, Sheriff, Magiya Brothers and Showstoppers stunt men are expected to mesmerise the spectators.

During a media address in Gaborone, the BMS social responsibility officer, Thabiso Seobamo promised the car spinning revellers that this year, they bring a better planned and organised event with perfect staged event.

“We went for a break for a while, because there were some issues that as a federation, we had to comply and make sure the sport is run under all the regulations as provided by the mother body,” he said.

Seobamo explained that BMS is affiliated to Botswana National Sport Commission, and they have also affiliated to international mother bodies.

He said they are affiliated to International Automobile Federation (FIA) and Federation of International Motorcycling (FIM), global governing bodies of motorcycle racing which BMS adheres to their rules and regulations.

He said they have included intensive discussions with the Botswana Police and other relevant stakeholders to come up with new logistics and safety measures. “As you know before there were no rules that guided the spor,” he said. BMS will regulate all races and every activity that will be taking place in Botswana with regard to motor sports.

Seobamo said, “We have put in place a third party public liability insurance as well as insurance for the drivers” a new development they have brought in place and they have called for safety during the event therefore involving environment Stuarts and Botswana Police.

“BMS is issuing licenses for the road rally techniques drivers and only those who are in possession will only be certified as legal spinners and drifters,” he said. Whoever will be spinning or racing in public roads stands a chance of having their licenses revoked or fined under the panel code of conduct provided under the Traffic Act of Botswana.

Drivers are therefore to take due diligence and apply for the rightful licences as only those with this pre-requisite stand to race, he added.

BMS FIA officer Joseph Khengere said, “What you should know is that previously, the vehicles were able to spin right next to the spectators, this time there will be a ten meter distance from the spinning spot to where the public will be hosted.”

He pleaded with the revellers to wear their most profound behaviour, stating that those partaking in the event are mostly the youth. He noted that they are aware that rally techniques is an adrenaline pumping sport but pleaded with the enthusiasts to take due diligence and avoid spoiling the fun for others. ENDS
