Butler eager to nurture empower northerners

14 Sep 2015

Still in euphoric mood from a historic win against Burkina Faso in Francistown a week ago, Zebras coach Peter Butler travelled up north to Chobe to donate footballs and training equipment to three primary schools in the area.

The primary schools, Pandamatenga, Lesoma and Plateau, received donations as part of Butler’s effort to nurture and develop talent in the northern region, which he said had been grossly neglected.

“The north has been left out in many respects but there is plenty of talent here,” he said, adding there was a lot of players originating from the north who made it in sports.

By putting proper structures in place, he said, children were given an opportunity to unleash their talent.

Acknowledging the donations, regional football chairperson, Dintle Baseyo, said they had reached out to Butler to help them develop the sport from grassroot level.

“The coach is actually coming to Chobe for the third time, so he has been really supportive,” he noted.

He added that the donated equipment would help them unearth talent in school going children. Baseyo also reiterated that for a long time, the northern part of the country had been neglected and isolated in sports development because of the distance from the capital city, despite abundance of talent.

In addition to donating to schools, Butler also donated to the local prison office. Ends
