06 Sep 2015

The planned multi-million Kanye Sports Complex which will occupy a 17.8 hectares of land at Mhiko in Kanye will benefit residents and the country in large.

Speaking during a site visit recently, Member of Parliament for Kanye North, Mr Patrick Ralotsia said the move was a step in the right direction for the government as construction of a stadium was long overdue for Kanye. Mr Ralotsia, who is also the Minister of Agriculture, said the facility would give the village a facelift and promote sport and entertainment industry in the country.

He said a facility of that magnitude would increase a pool of stadia in the country and position Botswana well to host big events that would inject money into the economy to better the lives of Batswana.

The MP said the stadia would reduce the burden of hosting major events at the national stadium in Gaborone.

Mr Ralotsia said the sport complex would reduce crime and afford the youth a place for sporting and entertainment, thereby keeping them away from bad practices. The facility, he said would increase chances of the nation in hosting international events to promote tourism and ultimately empowering citizens.

He said the sports complex would attract other forms of developments such as building of hotels and accommodation units.

The legislator said the provision of such a facility would ensure growth of other economic sectors, adding that international visitors using the facility would inject business, sport and social ideas into the country.

The Kanye-North legislator appreciated the site noting that it had to be fenced immediately after the Minister of Sport, Youth and Culture, Mr Thapelo Olopeng’s visit to the site soon.Kanye Administrative Authority chairperson, Mr Tlhomamo Dibeela said they have organised a JCB machine to work on roads to expedite development of the stadium.

He implored all stakeholders to come on board and work tirelessly to ensure the project become a success.

However, Mr Dibeela challenged service providers such as Water Utilities Corporation and Botswana Power Corporation as well as department of roads to link-up to facilitate the development of the project. Ends
