Francistown stadium awaits Zebras stallions
28 Aug 2015
The newly completed Francistown Stadium will host a match between Botswana national football team aka Zebras and visiting Burkina Faso national football squad on September 5, the Botswana Football Association (BFA) president, Tebogo Sebego has confirmed.
Addressing a media conference recently in Francistown, Sebego said the decision to play the match at the new facility followed certification and accreditation by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and consent by the visiting team.
He said after the decision, a Local Organising Committee (LOC) had since been put in place to do the ground work for match preparations.
Sebego further said the Zebras would arrive in Francistown on August 30 for camp, while tickets for the match would be sold at Shoprite and Checkers outlets in Gaborone, Mochudi, Kang, Maun and the hosting city.
The football administrator implored the Francistowners to actively take part to ensure that the game, which is of Grade A standard, becomes a success.
He added that people’s enthusiasm would put the city in a better position to bid as the national team is currently looking for a home ground among Lobatse, Gaborone and Francistown.
Earlier while addressing the Francistown full council meeting, local councillors applauded BFA for bringing an international football match to their city for the first in the history of football.
One of the councillors, Mr Peter Ngoma said the match would help put the second city in the international map as well as boost local businesses.
Councillors however implored BFA to help nurture talent in the north by developing playing grounds in some of the schools to develop talent at grassroots level.
Councillor Biki Mbulawa said though he appreciated the match coming to Francistown, he was worried about traffic as the A1 Road was still under construction. Ends
