Medal eludes Makwala

A cloud of sadness enveloped Botswana today (August 26) after Isaac Makwala’s hopes of winning a medal in the 400 metres race from the IAAF World Championships evaporated.
The country was united in anticipation that the African 400m champion would post a podium finish after his sterling performance in the semi-finals on Monday (August 24).
He had topped the qualifying list with a time of 44:11 seconds and the nation was upbeat that the Tutume born lad would indeed bag the first medal for Botswana at the ongoing competition.
However, Makwala finished on position five clocking 44.63 seconds. He started the race well but he was let down by his finishing techniques after slowing down when the race entered the home straight.
South African Wayde van Niekerk won the title with a world leading time of 43:48 seconds, followed by LaShawn Merritt from United States of America with 43; 65 seconds, and Olympics gold medalist Kirani James with 43:78 seconds.
Former 400 metres athlete, Obakeng Ngwigwa said it was a tough race, stressing that Makwala did nothing wrong as the race was just too fast.
University of Botswana sport psychology, sociology of sport and track and field lecture, Dr Tshepang Tshube said Makwala demonstrated high confidence and a strong determination to win this race, adding a few factors differentiate a good performance from a great performance.
According to Dr Tshube, ‘Badman’ had a good performance although it was not a great one.
“He had a good start but faded towards the end. It is important for Makwala to know that he is a champion and can win.
He needs the mental toughness and I am confident that he will do great in the future.
The next focus should be Rio 2016. He has what it takes to win,” he said.
Now focus will shift to Botswana’s high jumper, Kabelo Kgosiemang who will be competing in the qualifications tomorrow.
Team Botswana coach, Justice Dipeba is expected to name his four men for the 4 x400 metres relay. Currently, the team is made up of Onkabetse Nkobolo, Nijel Amos, Leaname Maotoanong, Isaac Makwala, Pako Seribe and Sakarea Kamperuka.
They will compete in their first heat on Saturday at 0440 am. Ends
