GU force victory against Lions
11 Aug 2015
Gaborone United managed to force a two nil victory against Gilport Lions Football Club (Former BMC football club) in a be MOBILE Premiership game played at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks on Sunday, August 9.
The Money Machine were under pressure to win the encounter at all cost, given that the so called “big clubs” Extension Gunners, Township Rollers and Mochudi Centre Chiefs had opened the league on Saturday at a high note.
However during the game, it was clear that Moyagoleele players lacked fitness because pound for pound, Gilport Lions were a better side than them, although they missed a lot of scoring opportunities on the day.
On the ninth minute Unobatsha Mbaiwa missed a seater, after GU keeper Goitseone Phoko was well beaten, but Mbaiwa decided to send the ball wide.
On the eighth minute, Lions won a corner kick, but it was put to waste by Kabelano Mooketsane.
Gaborone United did not just watch their opponents dictate terms to them, but they also tried to unleash good attacks but their efforts were thwarted by Gilport Lions solid defence.
On the 26 th minute GU were awarded a free kick which was well taken by Kgololo Kgogobi, but Lions keeper Katego Mbise rose to the occasion and cleared the ball.
The game went into a recess with a score board reading 0-0, and after the break both teams came determined to at least score an opening goal.
On the 85 th minute, Lions were caught in a spider’s web after Ntesang “Mirror” Simanyana, Kabo Rasuping and Mandla Mgadla made a good run which was finished by the Namibian international Benson Shilongo who was unmarked and netted it home, to make it one nil.
The goal seemed to have breathed life to the Money Machine as they continued moving forward in numbers looking for a cushion goal.
On referee optional time
, GU were awarded a corner which was well taken by Kgogobi and this time Matthews Nyamadawo did not waste time but headed it straight to the net to make it two nil.
After the game, GU gaffer Rahman Gumbo said he was happy that his team started the league with a win; given that last season they had a bad start.
Gumbo said he has identified all areas and departments that needed to be improved.
Lions coach Horatio Mahloane said they executed their plan very well although they lost the game at the end, adding that their intention was to neutralise GU’s wing play, although his players were caught by fatigue along the game.
He however said he was confident that as the league progresses they will get it right and ultimately bring good results. ENDS
