The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso has told Parliament that her ministry had no plans to introduce paid parking system at Selebi-Phikwe, Jwaneng, Francistown and Sowa.
However, Ms Tshireletso said the ministry was in discussions with players in the industry on ways and means through which parking maybe introduced at some selected public parking spaces in Gaborone.
She said Gaborone City Council had approved and submitted new bye-laws that were aimed at facilitating implementation of the initiative.
“It should be noted that there are some private developers who have already started this initiative either in full or partly within their private parking lots,” she said.
Ms Tshireletso further stressed that in some parking lots, the informal sector was active through the provision of car-guard services provided by car park attendants.
She noted that there was a need for further consultation with the private and the informal sector, prior to introducing paid parking systems.
The MP for Gaborone North, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister if there were plans to introduce paid parking system, and if so, state the time it would take for the exercise to be introduced. ENDS
