No plans to install traffic lights at junction

05 Aug 2015

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo, says 41 accidents occurred at the Glen Valley Y-junction along the A1 road between January 2012 and the end of June.

Mr Mabeo said out of the 41 recorded, three of the fatalities were reported during end of June. However, Mr Mabeo said there were no immediate plans to install traffic lights at the junction.

He said the road was adequately marked and had put in place road signs and markings to caution drivers as they approach the junction from Phakalane towards the city.

Minister Mabeo further said statistics had also shown that traffic lights did not prevent road accidents as the police continued to register high accidents. He stated that accidents were recorded even at places where traffic lights were installed along the same road and elsewhere in the country.

Nonetheless, Minister Mabeo said his ministry in collaboration with all other stakeholders would continue to find the best options to curb road accidents in the country and to sensitise road users to be cautious at all times in the road.

Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister to state the number of accidents that occurred at the Glen Valley Y-Junction, to state how many fatalities were reported to date and whether there were any plans to install traffic lights at the junction as a matter of urgency.
