Horse race organisers appeal for sponsorship
27 Jul 2015
Organisers of the Motokwe Independence Derby, Horse Racing and Cultural Fest, Knighthood Marketing and Motokwe Village Development Committee (VDC) are looking for sponsorships for the horse race and cultural activities billed for September 30.
Speaking in an interview, Knighthood Marketing director, Jacob Kelebeng said the Motokwe horse race started in the early 1970s as a recreational event characterised by horse racing and cultural exchange celebrations. Kelebeng said the event helped communities of Motokwe and surrounding villages to exchange and maintain their traditions.
The event had in the past few years grown at an alarming rate as villages near Motokwe such as Tsetseng, Morwamosu, Khekhenye and Tshwaane had been taking part regularly.
That, he said, increased the number of people attending the event from about 800 to approximately 1 500.
Kelebeng said more than 10 villages in Kweneng west were expected to grace the event.
The event, he said, had been running without sponsors for many years, but they intend to commercialise it this year.
He noted that the objectives of the event were to continue fostering spiritual and cultural respect between people while creating economic opportunities to benefit disadvantaged people.
Kelebeng said the event would comprise of short distance races, display of stalls, traditional food tasting, long distance races, a cultural festival and after party.
Cultural celebrations would be characterised by traditional beer tasting, dikhwaere, traditional dance, polka, DJs and artists performances.
The entertainment event shall be hosted at Motokwe Community Hall. Ends
