Take sports seriously

The Assistant Minister of Education, Skills and Development, Kgotla Autlwetse, has implored students to develop interest in different sporting codes as early as primary level.
Speaking during the official closing ceremony of the Botswana Primary School Sports Association (BOPSSA) games in Serowe recently, Autlwetse said sport had a great impact in changing one’s life.
Thus, he challenged the students to consider sport as a platform one could earn a living through.
The assistant minister advised students that for them to achieve this goal, they needed to be disciplined, aim higher, stay focused and also sacrifice their energies in sport activities.
He implored them to look up to excelling sportspersons such as Diphetogo Selolwane, Mogogi Gabonamong, Nigel Amos, Isaac Makwala and make them their role models as that could help them thrive for success.
Assistant Minister Autlwetse also applauded teachers, coaches and BOPSSA committee for their selflessness and patience in continuing to nurture children’s potential in sport for the past nine years despite the challenges they faced.
The participants were from regions across the country and they took part in all the sporting codes including chess, cricket, netball, volleyball and football.
Central region led the regions by five gold medals and four silver medals, while Kgatleng region settled for position two with three gold medals and one silver medal. The third position went to south region with one gold medal and three silver medals while position four went to Kweneng region with one silver medal and two bronze medals.
In volleyball, both girls and boys from Central region scooped gold medals while silver and bronze medals went to South and Kgalagadi regions respectively.
In netball, Kgatleng region scooped gold medals; Central region got silver medals while bronze medals went to North West region.
In Cricket, both boys and girls from Kgatleng region scooped gold medals, Central region scooped silver medals and Kweneng region got bronze medals. In Chess, girls from South region got gold medals, Central region got silver while North East region got bronze medals.
Boys from Central region walked away with gold medals in Chess, followed by South and North East regions scooping silver and bronze medals respectively.
In Football, both girls and boys from Central region walked away with gold medals, Kweneng football girls got silver and bronze medals went to girls from North West region.
Still on football, Kgatleng boys got silver medals and boys from Ghanzi region got bronze.
Meanwhile, football and volley ball team for both boys and girls and a netball team were selected from the games.
The teams are expected to represent Botswana at the Confederation of Southern Africa School Sport Associations (COSASSA) games which will be held in Zimbabwe in August this year. Ends
