Unruly behaviour wrecks marriages
14 Jul 2015
Married people have been encouraged to respect their marriage vows so as to reduce the escalating cases of divorce.
In an interview with BOPA, Raphalane Customary Court president Mr Nkaelang Lekgoa said cases of intent to divorce recorded in Jwaneng are worrisome. He said that they have already recorded five cases this year compared to four during the whole of last year.
This, he said was a high number considering that it is only half way into the year. He said in most cases women complained about their husbands’ errant behaviour.
Mr Lekgoa said the cases involved couples of various age brackets, including the elderly.
He said efforts by customary courts to reconcile couples are foiled by spouses who are not committed to making their marriage work.
He advised married couples not to discuss their marital problems with third parties before they talk about them with their spouses. Mr Lekgoa also advised married couples to be mindful of their behaviour around children.
He warned that bad habits such as cheating and fighting in front of children set a bad example for them and may also disturb them in their studies.
He advised parents to maintain peace in their homes for the sake of their children.
He said that the peace children enjoy at home is carried over to community and national levels. Ends
