The distribution of Tsabana and Malutu to health facilities and food relief service depots across the country commences this week following government confirmation that the supplementary feeding programme has resumed.
In an interview, Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Ketlhalefile Motshegwa, says the rollout benefits thousands of vulnerable people across the country who rely on government food relief and nutrition support programmes. Beneficiaries include children under the age of five, destitute persons, orphans, vulnerable children, people living with disabilities and other recipients of government food assistance.
“Government remains fully committed to the provision of fortified sorghum-based porridge to children under five years of age, particularly those identified as malnourished,” says Mr Motshegwa.
The minister says that the initiative forms part of the Vulnerable Groups Feeding Programme, which aims to combat child hunger, reduce malnutrition rates and improve the nutritional status of young children.
The minister says the distribution of Tsabana and Malutu remains a key intervention in strengthening food security and ensuring that vulnerable members of society have access to essential nutritional support.
Mr Motshegwa also confirms that the P300 Child Support Grant commences this month.
He states that the grant is provided for a period of up to one year per eligible child, targeting vulnerable households to help improve child welfare and reduce financial pressure on caregivers.
He further clarifies that children eligible for the grant must be Botswana citizens and must be under 12 months of age at the time of enrolment.
"The support is intended to assist families in meeting basic needs and other essential living expenses," he says.
He adds the introduction of the grant demonstrates government's commitment to strengthening the social protection system and improving the wellbeing of children across the country.
The initiative is expected to complement existing welfare programmes and enhance protection of children from poverty and food insecurity. ENDS
