Reikeletseng hails commission

Transforming Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) from a council to commission would trigger a number of positive changes.
Addressing affiliates at the BNSC annual general meeting in Gaborone on Saturday (July 11), BNSC chairperson, Solly Reikeletseng, announced that the Botswana National Sports Commission would take effect on a date to be formally communicated by the Minister of Youth, Sport and Culture.
The commission would replace the council, which has been the mother body of sport in Botswana for the past 50 years. Reikeletseng explained that the commission had a lot in store for sport.
It would include expansion of the functions of the BNSC corporate responsible for matters of sport in Botswana, composition of the BNSC board, legal recognition of Organs such as Women and Sport, and People-Living-with-Disabilities, professional sport, recreational sport, as well as anti-doping in sport.
“We are happy for the upcoming of this commission as it is what we have been waiting for many years. We have to use the new dispensation for the good,” he said. He said the transformation was ‘a positive change’ which has given BNSC impetus to plan for future success.
Reikeletseng said as the organisation bid farewell to its council days and ushers in a new era, it was worth to celebrate milestones achieved in the past 50 years.
“We have travelled a long road of sport administration through enjoyable moments and otherwise during the many years of delivery of sport in our country.
It is therefore fitting to pay tribute to the foundational years that set us in motion towards where we are today,” Reikeletseng said.
On other issues, Reikeletseng warned affiliates who did not comply with requirements of the Registrar of Societies that they risk having their memberships suspended this week.
He said suspension would be the first step of a process towards delisting those codes at the earliest possible time.
“I have to be firm to all affiliates to ensure that all governance compliance requirements are met at all times,” he said.
Meanwhile, Gift Nkwe of Karate and Daniel Molaodi of Volleyball were selected into the Board of the Commission as representatives of the sport associations. Their names would be forwarded to the minister of Youth Sport and Culture for approval. Ends
