Tati River needs fixing - deputy mayor

Prompt restoration of the aquatic ecosystem has been deemed vital in addressing the current deteriorating state of the Tati River.

Speaking during the stakeholder’s workshop in Francistown recently, the deputy mayor Mr Lechedzani Modenga said other solid and liquid waste is very high in the Tati River and there is need to act accordingly to revive the river.

He said people should understand that waste materials are a great hazard to the community’s health.

For his part, the principal north regional officer from the Department of Environmental Affairs, Mr Toteng Busang said different departments including the city leadership embarked on a mini-study and compiled reports on the extent of the damage of the river, and ward development committees also participated on the study.

However, he observed that there is still more to embark on structural improvement, river bank restoration as well as vegetative overgrowth removal.

Mr Busang said it should be also noted that vegetation such as reeds play a vital role in controlling the water flow of the river. Ends
