Madigele clarifies COHSASA engagement

The Council for Health Service Accreditation of Southern Africa (COHSASA) has been engaged in the accreditation process of Botswana health facilities since March 2009 to date.

Responding to a question in parliament, the Assistant Minister of Health, Dr Alfred Madigele, said the ministry had spent P6, 616 million during the period in which COHSASA was involved in the accreditation process of hospitals; operating procedures for health facilities, develop and pilot a nurse unit managers’ audit tool until December 2014.

Currently, he said they were engaged for case management of international referrals. The assistant minister was responding to a question posed by Selebi-Phikwe West MP, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse who wanted to know the period COHSASA has been engaged in the accreditation process of Botswana hospitals and health facilities.

Mr Keorapetse also wanted to know the amount the ministry has spent during the period in which COHSASA was involved.

Further, the MP wanted to know when government expects the accreditation process to conclude and how much it anticipates to spend before the process is completed.

In addition, he wanted to know if there are any initial recommendations from COHSASA for hospitals standards or compliance for accreditation purposes.

Selebi-Phikwe legislator also wanted to know if there are any challenges to accreditation of health facilities and whether Healthshare was ever engaged by the ministry of Health for accreditation purposes and if so why was it abandoned.
