No plans for traffic lights at Boatle junction

07 Jul 2015

Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Tshenolo Mabeo has told Parliament that he is aware that there are no traffic lights at Boatle junction.

However, Mr Mabeo said it should be noted that traffic signals were meant to control competing traffic flows at junctions or intersections with very high volumes of traffic, and as such there was a limitation in the role that they played in curbing traffic accidents.

He stated that the ministry had no plans to install traffic signals at the Boatle junction. He said the design of the upgrading of Gaborone-Lobatse road to dual carriageway was completed in September 2010.

However, due to the global economic meltdown experienced immediately after the completion of the design, construction of the road was shelved. Mr Mabeo stated that the design includes a grade separated junction at the Boatle Junction instead of traffic signals.

He further said construction of the road would be considered together with other deserving projects as soon as funds were available.

MP for Ramotswa, Mr Samuel Rantuana had asked the minister if he is aware that there were no traffic lights at Boatle junction and as such, accidents that could have been avoided do occur. He also wanted to know when the traffic lights would be installed to reduce the number of accidents. Ends
