Ghanzi residents decry land shortage
01 Jun 2015
Residents of Ghanzi have complained about shortage of land saying their township is surrounded by freehold farms.
They said this during a kgotla meeting addressed by the Member of Parliament for Ghanzi North, Mr Noah Salakae recently. The Umbrella Village Development Committee chairperson, Mr Jacket Marambe said shortage of land in the township presented a challenge, as Ghanzi was expanding.
He raised a concern that VDC was never consulted on developments being undertaken in the township. Mr Marambe decried lack of employment that resulted in the village youth resorting to Ipelegeng programme. He also thanked the government for the Presidential Housing Appeal programme, saying it had benefitted the privileged members of society.
Residents also complained about the delay in land allocation, saying it took about 20 years for one to secure a plot.
MP Salakae briefed them about the Land Administration and Management Policy, which would help regulate land allocation in the country.
Mr Salakae said the policy aimed at protecting the right of every Motswana in regards to allocation of land. Residents were also briefed on the Societies Amendment Bill, which required that the number of people who want to start a church should be 150. ENDS
