Challenges that have affected the youth in the Okavango region for a long time will soon be addressed, if a newly formed football club based in Gaborone achieves its objectives.
Tshegetsang Lopang, from the Okavango area, said in an interview that he formed the club not only for playing football, but also to unite young people from the Okavango area who live in Gaborone.
The young footballer, who studies and works in Gaborone, and is also the manager of the team, said he formed the club in 2013 to create a forum for sharing ideas about issues that distress their lives and that of their district.
For instance, he pointed out that youth at tertiary schools often got demoralised by the lack of accommodation and exorbitant transport fees; hence the club was there to offer support to such individuals.
The captain of the team, Keemetse Kaveto said they chose to meet through football as most of the Okavango youth were talented in football; hence the team doing well in Gaborone. He noted that they were not only looking forward to helping the youth but also to assist the parents whenever they wanted to seek medical help and other services.
Kaveto elaborated that the club wished to develop the lives of Okavango residents, more especially the youth, since they were the most affected by poverty.
“We want to instill the importance of education amongst the young people since it seems like our district is still behind in terms of developments,” he said.
He said through the football team, they had managed to raise funds by challenging other teams and playing for money with which they intend to help some unfortunate members of society back home. ENDS
