Even though over the years life’s challenges have pushed our societies to adopt the individualism concept for survival, there are still few people who care for their neighbours as if they are one of their own.

The sight of young children scavenging in garbage bins proved unbearable for one Sese resident, Mr Gomotsegang Ganetsang., who responded by registering LaModimo Charity Trust mainly aimed at taking care of streets kids who were an eyesore around Jwaneng.

As envisaged, the project did not come without challenges, some of which include acute shortage of accommodation.

“Our objective is to take these kids back to school and this is a challenge when they stay with their parents who also do not have decent accommodation. We are currently taking care of 60 children and have managed to accommodate about 12 of them in a caravan that was donated by one private company. Others come here in the mornings to bath and eat breakfast before they go to school,” he explained in an interview.

Even though the centre has been allocated a plot, there have not been any developments because of lack of funds. They currently use the traditional fire place to prepare meals for the children, something which has proven to be a challenge during harsh weather conditions.

Nonetheless, recently Jwaneng based Majwe Mining Joint Venture (Pty) Ltd heeded their call by constructing a kitchen and jungle gym for the young ones’ recreation.

Through the Corporate Social Investment programme, the company’s employees engaged in fundraising activities and contributed their manpower to make the project a success.

According to the company spokesperson, Mr Archibald Ngakaagae, acknowledged that LaModimo Charity Trust had challenges that needed both short term and long term interventions.

He said therefore his company decided to assist with the kitchen, jungle gym and clothing as a short term measure.
“We conducted fundraising activities from which we accumulated over P40 000 and with the company management we were able to come up with this project. From here we will go back to the drawing board and see if we can help beyond this,” he noted.

Mr Ngakaagae also urged other private businesses to come forth with any type of assistance because there is still a lot to be done for the centre to be a fully-fledged one with necessary facilities. ENDS
