Legae academywins David Magang quiz

For the past four weeks, eight secondary schools in Gaborone battled it out to be crowned the David Magang Inter-school Quiz Champions and Legae Academy had emerged the winner.

The eight schools that participated were Legae Academy, Al Nur, Livingstone Kolobeng College, St. Joseph’s College, Maru-a-pula, Ledumang Senior Secondary School, Gaborone Senior Secondary School and Rainbow Senior School.

The competition commenced on March 7, this year and saw an elimination of two schools, Rainbow Senior School and Gaborone senior school in preparation for the semi-finals, which were held on March 14. Ultimately the top four which competed on March 21, were Legae Academy, Maru-a-pula, St Joseph’s College and Al Nur.

New comers, Al Nur Secondary School, made it to the top four, followed by St Joseph’s College, the only government school to scuffle the dust with Maruapula, last year’s winners who came second place, while Legae Academy took a huge leap and being this year’s Inter-School Quiz Champions.

The fourth placed school scooped some prices, the third being St Joseph’s college were awarded P1 000 price money, second position P2 000 and the winners P3 000 and a free golf lesson for all the participants, four other students from their school and a teacher.

Mr David Magang, chairpersonof Phakalane Estates is a well-known individual in the business community, the legal society, political circles and also in the field of education. A barrister by profession, the first citizen who started a legal practice in Botswana, founder of Phakalane Estates, is also a director in one of the Universities in Botswana.

He has, in many ways encouraged the expansion of education and skill development in Botswana. 

He has set up a number of rolling trophies for bright Batswana students in a couple of schools and also a trophy for the best school producing the maximum number of grades A & B at the junior secondary level.

In support of the ultimate goal of having a well-educated nation, Mr Magang saw it paramount to encourage Batswana to empower themselves by means of educational projects. 

This mission has proven to be worthwhile. In further support of this initiative and by way of pioneering it, Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort, a division of Phakalane Estates is conducting the Second Annual David Magang Inter-school Quiz competition.

For his part, the managing director of Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort, Mr Lesang Magang said that the event was geared at instilling a culture of learning amongst student. Most questions were centered on general knowledge, scientific, historical, entertainment and geometry questions, which included one that asked which is Botswana’s national tree?

He said learning was an ongoing process and students needed to be equipped with the culture not only to acquire what they wanted to know to pass their final exams.

In addition, Mr Magang noted that it was their wish to host the event annually and grow it regionally and internationally to attract more students around Botswana. ENDS
