PE music teachers have room to progress
22 Mar 2015
Ministry of Education and Skills Development piloted the subjects of Music and Physical Education in secondary schools across the country in 1999 and 2004.
This was said by the Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Moiseraele Goya when responding to a question in Parliament .
Piloting for Music, Mr Goya said ended in 2006 in junior secondary schools when it was rolled out to other schools. “It has to be noted that piloting of this subject started in senior secondary schools across the country in 2009. Monitoring of the programme was conducted in 2011 after the first examination.
The monitoring report recommended rescinding of the pilot project phase and rolling out of the subject to other schools,” he added.
The Assistant Minister said Physical Education was piloted in 2004 until 2007, adding that the subject was then rolled out to all senior secondary schools in 2008 after its evaluation.
These subjects, he said, were covered by senior teacher I – general hence any teacher who offered Physical Education and Music were competitors for the position of senior teacher I – general at junior secondary schools.
As for senior secondary schools, Mr Goya said these subjects did not have a senior teacher, because schools had only one teaching post for these subjects and as such fell under senior teacher-Practicals and as such could progress to that post.
Member of Parliament for Boteti East, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked Mr Goya if he was aware that the subjects of Physical Education and Music had been piloted for the past 10 years in Boteti East and that the teachers who taught these subjects were not progressing as evidenced by the fact that there was no senior teacher for these subjects in Boteti East.
