Ministry aware of maintenance need in Gaborone schools
16 Mar 2015
The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso has told Parliament that she is aware that primary schools in Gaborone are in need of major maintenance.
The schools include Segoditshane, Camp and Notwane Primary Schools in Gaborone Central constituency.
She stated that the ministry through Gaborone City Council (GCC) had put in to place a long term maintenance plan in which all the primary schools and other council buildings would be maintained incrementally over a number of years.
Ms Tshireletso said Segoditshane Primary School had been included in the maintenance for the coming financial year 2015/16 while Camp and Notwane schools will be considered in subsequent years.
The assistant minister stated that during the construction of primary schools, the foundation of buildings are normally treated with chemicals for termite and ant control as part of the construction contract.
She said where there are infestations of bats in buildings they are removed by removing ceilings and replacing them whilst at the same time blocking any holes in the roof to prevent further ingress of bats.
She further stated that GCC has awarded contracts for extermination of termites and ants at Segoditshane Primary School and the contractor is currently on site.
Gaborone Central MP, Dr Phenyo Butale had asked her if she is aware of the dilapidated and inhabitable state of the camp, Segoditshane and Notwane Primary Schools and what plans are in place to renovate these old schools.
He also asked what the ministry is doing to address problems associated with bats, rats and termites which pose a serious health threat to both teachers and pupils. ENDS
