Customary courts impress Kenya High Commissioner
08 Mar 2015
The Kenya High Commissioner, Ms Jean Kimani says she is impressed by the way Botswana customary courts handle conflicts.
Speaking during a courtesy call on the Tati Town Customary Court president, Kgosi Edward Showa during her two-day visit to Francistown, Ms Kimani said the use of the kgotla system to mediate on conflicts was a commendable initiative as it promoted family unity.
She said during her stay in Botswana, she realised that Kenya and Botswana could exchange a lot and develop in the process.
Ms Kimani said another area that impressed her about Botswana was the beef and diamond industry, adding that during her tenure as the High Commissioner, she would ensure that Botswana’s beef reach the Kenyan market.
She also applauded Botswana for successfully managing her diamonds. “The way Botswana successfully managed its diamond is a lesson not only to Kenya but to the rest of the world,” she noted.
Ms Kimani said Kenya believed that a lot could be done with Francistown, hence their efforts to create a twinning arrangement with one of the cities in Kenya, which is still to be identified.
The High Commissioner handed 16 school uniforms to the Lephoi Centre for Children with visual impairment. Uniforms were donated by the Kenyan Community in Francistown (KCIF) and Ms Kimani commended her fellow countrymen and women for taking the spirit of Harambe (pulling together) beyond their borders.
