Minister clears Gaborone plot allocation issue
04 Mar 2015
Minister of Lands and Housing Mr Prince Maele told Parliament that it is not true that it has taken over 25 years for plots to be allocated in Gaborone. Mr Maele said that the truth of the matter is that there have been allocations of plots in Phase 4, Block 3, Block 7, Block 9, Block 10 and Tsholofelo between 1990 and 2015.
He said that while there are some facts that there may be plots that have not been developed for over 30 years, his ministry is not aware of any such plots that have been brought to its attention and that no action have been taken to repossess them.
The current development covenant requires that plots be paid for and be developed within two years from the date of offer, he said adding that the time taken for the forfeiture of title deed or withdrawal of offer varies.
He noted that this could be dependent on whether the allottees exercise their right to challenge the decision or the process. Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister if he is aware that it has taken over 25 years for plots to be allocated in Gaborone and what measures are in place to address this anomaly.
Mr Nkaigwa also wanted the minister to state the period taken to repossess undeveloped plots for over 30 years despite the fact that the ministry has been informed about such plots. ENDS
