The Japanese Ambassador to Botswana, Mr Masahiro Onishi has applauded the government on its efforts of improving access to electricity.
Speaking during the handing over of the Japanese electricity project to seven primary schools in Kudumatse in the Mahalapye Sub district on Tuesday March 3, Mr Onishi said he was delighted that the Japanese Embassy extended its support to assist in such initiatives.
Mr Onishi said the completion of the electrification project which cost P243 330 would benefit the following primary schools, Moshopha, Ngwapa, Mmutlane, Kudumatse, Bonwapitse, Mmaphashalala and Mosolotshane. He noted that with electricity, the schools would be able to utilise the computers and television.
He described electricity as one of the basic needs that everyone should be given access to as it contributes to one’s quality of life.
Mr Onishi said electricity does not only provide lighting but also enables students to access information technology which tremendously enhance the quality of education.
The Ambassador said his government aimed to improve the quality of education in the country through the schools electrification projects.
He said the children lead the future of Botswana and raising well rounded children could only be achieved when all concerned parties work together.
Ambassador Onishi noted that for maximum benefit to be gained from the Japanese assistance there should be support and understanding from Botswana government, Mahalapye Sub District Council, the seven schools and the communities.
Mr Onishi encouraged students from the electrified schools to further develop their desire to know more about the world beyond their villages to improve their academic skills.
The Mahalapye Sub Council chairperson, Mr Tassman Cebani thanked the Japanese Embassy for the grant which made it possible for the seven schools to be electrified.
He pleaded with the embassy to continue working with them in order to develop the sub district. ENDS
