Francistown gears up for mini snooker league

26 Feb 2015

In a quest to take the game of snooker to another level, the Francistown pool organising committee has organised a mini pool league, which will see 10 teams from Francistown and its outskirts battle for the 2015 championship.

In an interview, the president of the organising committee, David Letsholathebe stated that across the world a game of pool has been regarded as a superb indoor game that involves leagues in Botswana and beyond.

Letsholathebe said it was opportune for Francistown to start its own league in order to bring about entertainment and competition to both the pool fanatics and players.  He said, besides competition between teams, the game also brings about socialisation amongst players and fans that get to know each other; thus it builds rapport.

In addition, he stated that initially there were 14 teams that had pledged to join the tournament, however only 10 managed to join the league and they were asked to part with P1 000 as a joining fee. The teams include: Big N Bold, Phumulani, Secret Bar, Randavours, Wood Burn, Botalaote, The Palace, Dongo Dongos and Go nowa jang pool clubs.

The pool leader said the majority of the teams are from Francistown while others are from the outskirts of the city and the league is divided into two legs. The first leg kicks started on February 14, 2015 and will end on Easter holidays when teams will have an opportunity to recap and analyse how they played.

However, he said after that break, the second leg will continue mid-May and will end July 23 with the price giving ceremony on July 25.  Letsholathebe stated that the league games are played only on weekends and the Saturday games start at 5pm while the Sunday ones start at 4pm.

However, he said due to limited funds, the league will rely on the teams’ joining fee to reward the champions when the league ends.

Letsholathebe has urged sponsors to come aboard and noted that they intend to take the league nationally next year and ultimately register with Botswana National Sports Council  and turn the league into a professional one.ENDS
