No eye surgeries at referral hospitals

Referral hospitals no longer perform eye surgeries as these have devolved to the centres of excellence in Scottish Livingstone and Sekgoma Memorial Hospitals.
Answering a question in Parliament, Assistant minister of Health, Dr Alfred Madigele said no eye surgeries were performed in referral hospitals in the past year.
He however said in the past year a total of 1730 eye surgeries were done at Scottish Livingstone and were all successful.At Sekgoma Memorial, he said there were 1360 eye operations done and out of that number 68 had complications and five of them were referred to South Africa.
He said during this past year there were no claims registered due to damaged eyes during operations.Ramotswa MP, Mr Samuel Rantuana, had wanted the minister to state the qualifications of foreign doctors and specialist who perform eye surgery at referral hospitals.He also wanted the minister to say how many operation have been successful , how many have not been successful during the past year and what government is doing for patients whose eyes were damaged due to the operations.
