Boxers impress in Best-of-Best

About five boxers from the DTCB boxing stable clinched gold in tight boxing contests of the Best of the Best boxing tournament at the University of Botswana student centre over the weekend (February 21-22).

The young and promising boxers under the tutelage of former national team pugilists, Thebe Setlalekgosi and Bathusi Mogajane, showed character in all the closely contested bouts lined up for the two days much to the excitement of their coach, Setlalekgosi.

The latter, a star boxer in his formative years said in an interview that he was impressed with the progress of his charges who were still young, but showing maturity with every passing tournament.

The club formerly known as BDVC has produced polished boxers in the mould of the Setlalekgosi twin brothers Thebe and Thapelo, Thuso Khubamang, Moabi Mothiba and Mmoloki Nogeng amongst others.

It was Marshal Mokgwaela who led the pack to a resounding victory on Sunday’s final match (February 22) in a light fly weight match against visiting Khumoyame Basupeng from Ghanzi.

In what could go down as the bout of the tournament, another promising talent from DTCB, Thabang Motsewabeng convinced all the judges to reach an anonymous decision and award him gold against a highly charged, Zibani Chikanda from Selibe Phikwe.

In another interesting derby in the women’s welter, Keneilwe Rakhudu stamped her authority over the former champion, Pearl Morake of Botho College.

A cagey first round saw both boxers struggle to find their range but during the second round Rakhudu started to land straight combinations with hooks, something which attracted Morake a warning from the referee for holding.

In the men’s welter weight 22-years-old hard hitting, Kagiso Bagwasi beat Ookeditse Bobeilwe of SSKB while his young brother, Kabelo continued his impressive form against Alphias Farmer in the 60kg division.  In other matches, Tirafalo Seoko was on top form against Oarabile Setlhako after he impressed in a semifinal match against Opelo Modungwa.

Kang-based women’s fly weight promising youngster, Koketso Dipogiso was injured in the second round and lost after the referee stopped contest against Rhodar Maswabi of Glen Valley.

Keoagile Rantutu won by a walk over against Mothusi Moitoi after a slim semifinal victory against Mmusi Tswiige.

In the only heavy weight match, Tsenang Mohuhutso won by a split division against Oteng Phatshwe of Eastern Military Garrison. ENDS
