In a bid to grow and sell professional boxing to Batswana, Bond Promotions will, on March 28, stage a fight between one of the promising pugilist, Kgomotso Bok and Peter Kelane.
Kelane, a Motswana who has been based in South Africa holds a record of eight professional fights in South Africa having won five and lost three.
Bok on the other hand turned professional in 2013 and has so far won three of his fights and lost one which was his debut into professional boxing in July 2013 in Namibia.
Nevertheless, the pugilist seems to have left a lasting impression in the hearts of Batswana after his March 2014 fight against Letsibogo Basenyapelo whom he handed a technical knockout as thousands watched live on Btv.
The duel, which will be staged at Riverwalk open space, will be the fourth professional boxing event to be hosted in Botswana which will also offer young and upcoming boxers exchange blows to support the main fight.
The main supporting bout is between Ryan Seakolo and Patrick Seoko in the 55.3kg. Few fights have been lined up as Moses Kamera locks horns against Modiri Sanyati, while Tshepo Khutloeng tackles Thato Monabana.
In an interview, Bond Promotions director, Bond Ngubula stated that staging a fight in Botswana was a milestone for his promotion stable more so that professional boxing was still emerging in the country.
Ngubula stated that so far, Bok is the most accomplished upcoming boxer under his stable following his 2014 fight where Batswana started to appreciate the sport even more after watching him.
Therefore, he said they were taking advantage of this exposure and using Bok as the headline boxer in their fights.
As a way of branding the boxers, he said they had embarked on promoting boxers on social media in order to develop their fan base and they had also visited the boxers’ villages in order for the people to appreciate their own talent.
“Our boxers are all new and are not famous and we want to sell them to Batswana so that they start appreciating their own children,” he said. The promoter stated that his boxers had been insured with AON which was a requirement in professional boxing that a boxer cannot step on the ring without an insurance cover.
He indicated that they had sealed a deal with Medical Rescue International who would be providing medical assistance during the fight in March. The promoter called on Batswana to support professional boxing.
“For the sport to grow, we need all stakeholders to come on board and give us support because we are still at an infant stage,” he added. Ngubula admitted that they had made mistakes in the past fights with international boxers failing to turn up.
However, he noted that they had learnt from these experiences by ensuring that they liaise with control boards from all the countries they have relations with. He said tickets would start selling this month with VIP tickets at P500 and standard seats cost P100. ENDS
