Minister aware of water shortage in Letlhakane

15 Dec 2014

The Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources is aware that there is no water and electricity supply at Phase I, ll and Tawana Extension in Letlhakane.

Answering a question in Parliament, Minister Kitso Mokaila said it was because the areas were on unserviced land. He said due to the current financial constraints, he was not in a position to state when water and electricity network extensions would be effected in the new phases location in Letlhakane.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Boteti East, Mr Sethomo Lelatisitswe had asked the minister if he was aware that some residents who have been allocated residential plots at the new phases location in Letlhakane were not connected to water and electricity.

Mr Lelatisitswe wanted to know when government plans to provide water and electricity to this location as people already reside there without those amenities.

He also asked when the planned sewerage reticulation network would be constructed as it was approved and allocated funds previously in the District Development Plan 8 and 10 . Mr Lelatisitswe further asked the minister if he was aware that the water being currently consumed in Letlhakane was of a grade three nature and if so when will water treatment plant be built to provide residents with safe drinking water.

Minister Mokaila said Letlhakane Sewerage Project was budgeted for design only under DDP 8 and NDP 10 and was completed in 2009 by the Central District Council.

He said the construction phase funds have not been secured to date, therefore he was not in a position to advise on when the Letlhakane Sewerage project will be constructed. The minister further said the portable water supplied by the Water Utilities Corporation in Letlhakane was of class II and meets the national drinking water specification BOS 32:2009. ENDS
