Debts should not disadvantage pupils - assistant minister
11 Dec 2014
Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Mr Moiseraele Goya says no child should be excluded from continuing with schooling or be denied certificates and testimonials on account of debt owed to schools.
In a statement in Parliament on December 10, Mr Goya said all debts resulting from failure to pay school fees, loss of both library and textbooks and any other incurred by students should be followed up with parents.
He explained that in a situation where a child was proceeding from junior secondary school to senior secondary school, their names and all other information relating to the debt should be forwarded to the senior secondary school they had been admitted to.
The assistant minister added that the school where the child had been admitted to would pursue the matter with the concerned parents.
“It remains the responsibility of both school heads and regional directors to follow up with parents to collect monies owed to the schools,” he said. Mr Goya further said the ministry had directed school heads through directives and savingrams to take heed of such issue and desist from denying students obtaining their certificates or testimonials.
The statement, he explained, followed parliamentary questions that had been raised and reports that the ministry continued to receive on the issue. ENDS
