Child headed homes weigh on education

11 Dec 2014

A resident of Lesoma in the Chobe District, Mr Richard Kashweeka, says there is evidence that children heading household perform badly in schools.

Speaking at a prize giving and farewell ceremony at Lesoma Priimary School recently, Mr Kashweeka said some parents spent most of their time abusing alcohol leaving household chores to the children.

“It isn’t right for a child to come from school having eaten at break-time to reach home and be expected to go to bed without being provided with an evening meal,” said Mr Kashweeka.

Mr Kashweeka a former Ditshwanelo employee, cautioned parents who neglected their children that they could be punish by law, noting that there was need for the school to have mentors to assist teachers with academic work.

“It is the responsibility of the community to ensure that we nurture the skills and knowledge of all pupils not only at primary level but throughout their academic journey, noted Mr Kashweeka. He pleaded with parents to guide against abuse of drugs among students.

School Head Ms Constance Mokoti said that such events were carried out to inspire students that were lagging behind to work hard to be amongst those who receive prizes. PTA chairperson Mr Kawana Poniso expressed concern that from 27 standard six students only one attained grade A.

“This is worrisome as this class will be writing their PSLE examinations next year, as parents we should work hand in hand to certify that this changes,” said Mr Poniso.  ENDS
