Order returns to Good Hope senior
06 Nov 2014
The Ministry of Education and Skills Development has assured the nation that disturbances and near rioting at Good Hope Senior Secondary School on November 4 has not disrupted the ongoing BGCSE examinations.
A press statement from the ministry stated that order had been restored and both the school authorities and members of the security services would continue to monitor the situation to ensure peace and safety for all students.
The ministry said it had noted with great concern the disturbances and near rioting at school by some male students. This followed the arrest of a form four boy who was caught in the girls’ hostels at 10 pm by the school authorities.
It stated that a number of boys vandalised school buildings and other structures in retaliation to the arrest of the boy. Security services were engaged to put the students under control, adding that internal and police investigations were ongoing.
The press release further stated that the ministry condemned students' misconduct since they were sent to school to learn and graduate with good results as a foundation for their academic growth.
It said acts such as vandalism of school property, misbehaving to school staff, drug and alcohol use, bullying and other forms of misconduct were not condoned in schools, and therefore the ministry urged parents to continue engaging their children to desist from such behaviour.
Out of concern that the latest incident represented an escalation of recurring misbehaviour by students at the school, Assistant Minister Moiseraele Goya engaged the students, parents and teachers with a view to restoring order in the school. Ends
