The club secretary of Maun Greater Lions says they will continue to look after the needs of students at Kareng hostels by sourcing the necessary items to assist them.
Speaking at a ceremony to hand over assortment of items to Kareng hostels occupants, Ms Frances Palmer said the project was an initiative of the Maun Greater Lions club in partnership with the Forde Lions club of Norway.
The club donated a deep freezer, 300 black plastic chairs, 96 small chairs, 20 footballs, 20 steel folding tables, 250 stainless steel cups, 300 stainless steel plates, six cartoons of reading books, a satellite dish with an LNB and a 10-metre electric cord. The Maun Administrative Authority bought a decoder.
Ms Palmer said the club was already involved in monthly projects in Maun. “We screen eyes in partnership with Opticals Botswana, distribute free reading glasses and frames for prescription spectacles and we also feed pensioners at Maun Post Office,” she said.
For his part, Kareng councillor, Mr Lekopanye Ledimo appealed to the students at the hostels not to damage the items. “This is a very generous gesture by the Maun Greater Lions Club and I have been reliably informed that it is just a start,” he said.
Cllr Ledimo said he was happy that clubs such as Greater Lions continued to assist communities in very remote areas. “Government cannot do it alone but needs every bit of assistance from non-governmental organisations,” he said.
He indicated that children were the leaders of tomorrow and as such they should be assisted in anyway possible for them to realize their full potential. ENDS
