Cancer Association registers more volunteers

02 Nov 2014

Cancer Association Botswana (CAB) director, Ms Sharon Munyoro says she is happy to have finally managed to register volunteers in Francistown.

In an interview at the completion of the three-kilometre stiletto walk from Galo Mall to John Mackenzie school and back, Ms Munyoro said last year the association did not get enough volunteers in their efforts to heighten cancer awareness campaigns.

She was happy that they managed to register a good number of volunteers for the campaign this year. She said volunteers helped organise all cancer awareness campaigns including the annual stiletto walk.

She further said the association also had new partners in Francistown. Ms Munyoro also explained that the pink colour was used for cancer awareness because the first lady to die after revealing that she had cancer liked pink.

On why the stiletto, Ms Munyoro said although the bruising effects of stilettos were nothing compared to the ravages of cancer itself, the event nonetheless, presented an opportunity for those wearing them to show their support for those affected.

“Some even develop blisters and every time they look at the scars of those blisters they will remember those who suffered breast cancer,” she said. Still at the event, messages on breast cancer were shared and women were encouraged to always screen their breast for unusual lumps every morning.

Those who attended also engaged in zumba dance and aerobics and Ms Munyoro said the day was not only about messages but also about encouraging people to change their lifestyles and engage in healthy activities.

The event ran simultaneously with one in Gaborone and while in Francistown it was only the second while Gaborone was staging it for the eighth time.  ENDS
