Computer knowledge imperative

28 Oct 2014

Investments sales manager, Ms Beauty Moeta says computer knowledge is essential in today’s communication network.

Speaking during Sesigo Sefalana Sa kitso Project launch in Hukuntsi recently, Ms Moeta said computer was the next medium of communication that would eventually take over from radio and television.

She said computers were very interactive and not limited by geographical boundaries. Ms Moeta indicated that libraries were being equipped with computer through Sesigo programme since they were information centres that provide free access to information on wide range.

She emphasised therefore that communities could not be left out when computers and Internet were mentioned. She said the world was swiftly moving from analogue to digital and therefore crucial for people to learn and be able to use Internet.

Ms Moeta noted that Internet had reduced the world to one global village thereby facilitating easy access and quick retrieval of information.  Ms Moeta said Sesigo Sefalana Sa Kitso project came into being after Ministry of Youth Sport and Culture through Botswana National Library Services and Bill and Melinda Gates foundation partnered to upgrade libraries.

For her part Hukuntsi East Village District Council(VDC) treasure, Ms Goratwamang Tlhage said Hukuntsi library started operating back in 1993 and it was called Hukuntsi reading room back then.

She said it was under control of the VDC and the community until 1998 when government extended a helping hand to partner with the VDC and the community to upgrade it.

Ms Tlhage said computers were first introduced to the Hukuntsi library last year adding that the elderly were not using the library as it was supposed to be despite the affect that computer lesson were offered freely.

Ms Tlhage encouraged the elderly to use library because reading and surfing Internet could reduce stress. ENDS
