DCEC empowers anti-corruption clubs

13 Oct 2014

The Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) public education branch in Francistown has encouraged students to form anti-corruption clubs in their schools.

Speaking during a one-day anti-corruption clubs capacity building workshop on October 11, the principal anti-corruption officer, Ms Felistus Hlabano said such clubs in schools would help change people’s perception and attitude through peer education activities.

Ms Hlabano also urged young people to actively participate in the fight against corruption in their society. She indicated that the DCEC believed in students’ capabilities and out of school youth to shun corruption from a tender age.

She said young people were faced with many challenges such as unemployment and poverty, which could lead them to corrupt practices. Nevertheless, she said they were planning to have a yearly active students’ congress that would report on their challenges and achievements as clubs.

Anti-corruption officer, Mr Boago Koloi indicated that a consolidated force that comprised both the DCEC and youthful members of the society was the ultimate weapon in the fight against corruption.

Thus, Mr Koloi encouraged the youth to report all incidences of corruption to DCEC as well as take keen interest in formulation of anti-corruption polices.  Anti-corruption clubs, he said sought to educate and disseminate information to the youth in order for them to meaningfully participate in social and economic activities.

A teacher at Setlalekgosi junior secondary school, Mr Magalo Thini urged students to return to their respective clubs and work tirelessly with others to disseminate information from the workshop.

Mater Spei College, Setlalekgosi and Selepa junior secondary schools participated in the anti-corruption workshop. Ends
