12 Oct 2014

The Francistown Centre for the Deaf on Friday, October 10 received toiletry and stationery donations from Attorney General Chambers.

Speaking during the handing over ceremony, Attorney General Chambers’ secretary for disability committee, Ms Tebogo Makhulela said she believed that it was just a beginning of many working relationships that they would undertake to ensure support for persons with disability.

Ms Makhulela stated it was common knowledge that disability was an issue that affects the students one way or the other.

She said they felt the need to provide unwavering support for persons with disability and most importantly to raise awareness to the general public that they need to support persons with disability.

Ms Makhulela said they were raising awareness as there was need to ensure a change of mind set with regards to how people approach issues of disability in the country.

Furthermore, she noted disability is not acquired by choice, adding that some of it is acquired at birth or at any stage in life. Consequently, the school head, Ms Chandabona Chida appreciated the gifts and said it was good to receive them because some of the students experience different challenges.

Ms Chida said their strategy aims at using all means of hearing impaired so that students gain complete understanding, adding that the learners use the same curriculum used by the mainstream pupils and do not perform well.

She mentioned that there was pre-vocational department where pupils are taught sewing, carpentry and leather works. Ms Chida added that the learners also excel in extra- circular activities like sports and projects. ENDS
