Middlepits cluster receive water project

09 Oct 2014

The Middlepits cluster which comprises of Gakhibana, Bogogobo, Middlepits, Khuis and Kolonkwaneng was on October 8 handed the long awaited multi-million cross border water project, which commenced on May 2013.

The project, which cost government around P60 million, is a temporary and emergency relief for the residents of the five villages who had been struggling with water shortage for a long time. The water would be drawn across the border from South Africa and will discharge 25 cubic meter per hour.

When handing the project to the five village authorities, principal water engineer in the department of water affairs, Mr Edward Nkutlwang said residents should use water sparingly because it had cost government a lot of money.

Mr Nkutlwana further advised them to take care of the facility which included a booster station and treatment plant saying if they vandalise them they would go back to their woes of running short of water.

Also, he urged them to desist from watering livestock because government had spent a lot on bills. The village authorities applauded the good job done by the contractor, KAYCON, and the department of water affairs in providing them with water.

Kgosi Giel Jacos III of Gakhibana said they were happy as the project had made a positive change in their lives. He said in the past they had problems because their water supply was unreliable and that contributed to civil servants refusing to be posted in their respective villages.

Mr Jacobs challenged residents of the concerned villages to take care of the little water they were receiving. He pointed out that it was the duty of everyone to make sure that they jealously guard against misuse of any kind so that the project could benefit them for years to come.

The Village Development Committee (VDC) chairperson of Kolonkwaneng, Ms Mankuku Kgaodi also heaped praises on the project saying it would improve their standard of living.

Ms Kgaodi said it would enable them to start utilising government initiatives such as backyard gardening which was not possible in the past due to lack of water.

Some of the residents expressed fear that once the department of water affairs hands over the project to Water Utilities Corporation they might start experiencing shortage of water again.

The contractor who heaped praises on the cordial relations he had with the villagers donated computers and combined photo copying machine and printer each to primary schools of the five villages. Ends
