Beneficiaries decry inflated small stock prices
09 Oct 2014
Small stock beneficiaries in the poverty eradication programme at Mogorosi in the Central District have accused some farmers for refusing to sell their animals at government buying price of P700.
They raised their concern in an interview recently saying that a number of farmers in and around their village were not willing to sell them at government buying price despite quoting the same amount.
They said the problem of high prices for goats was hindering them from benefitting from the programmes even though they were willing to utilise them in order to graduate from poverty.
They explained that some farmers would at first during the collection of quotation promise them goats, but they would later find their promised goats being sold to other buyers without consulting them.
They further observed that farmers preferred cash as opposed to cheques from government hence selling to individuals after agreeing to supply beneficiaries. Meanwhile the beneficiaries pleaded with government to buy small stock in bulk and distribute them amongst deserving beneficiaries in order to solve the problem. Ends
