Kasane man kills elephant

08 Oct 2014

The Department of Wildlife and National Parks is investigating a case in which a 36-year-old man shot and killed an elephant in Kasane.

In an interview, the man who killed the elephant, said he did so in self defence. The incident, he said, took place around 2 am on Tuesday (October 7) when he was woken up by sounds of the elephant in his yard.

“I then chased it away only for it to return charging at me,” he said, adding that he then fired a shot. "By the time I shot, I could not even tell the difference between the elephant and the dust it had raised, it was either me or the elephant and I shot it about five meters away from me,” said the man, who preferred to be anonymous.

The elephant, which some suspect to be a popular teenage bull called Mr Plateau, then ran off only to die in the middle of the road a few meters away from where it was shot. Wildlife officials confirmed that they were handling the case and that investigations were underway.

“The gentleman reported the case and informed us that he did it on the grounds of self defence,” acting regional wildlife officer, Mr Lesole Montshiwa said.  He also confirmed that they had received calls about the elephant since Friday.

Mr Montshiwa explained that the law permitted people to kill animals in self defence, but they will need to establish that to conclude the matter.  Human-wildlife conflict has continued to be a challenge in the district.

According to the last seating of the full council, 292 cases of human-wildlife were reported and P333 214. 50 was spent on farmers as compensation for damaged property. Ends
